Nostalgia has sparked a revival of a 1970s dinner party favourite this Christmas – the Black Forest gateau.

Sales of the chocolate sponge, cherry and whipped cream pudding are booming with Waitrose recording a 134 per cent increase on last year.

Marks & Spencer has also noticed an uptick and is selling a £15 luxury version while Morrisons says it has been the fastest-growing dessert of the year.

The soaring popularity of the item may have been started by social media users reminiscing about the iconic, long-discontinued Sara Lee frozen Black Forest gateau that was a common treat in the 1970s and 80s.

Celebrity chefs have jumped on the bandwagon – with Delia Smith sharing her own recipe and Rick Stein showing how to whip up his version. An M&S spokesman said people ‘are looking to enjoy a sense of nostalgia’.
