ROOKE: Democrats Use Laken Riley’s Death To Protect Illegal Immigrants From Deportation

Senate Democrats are blowing their chance to show voters they learned their lesson from November regarding their handling of the Laken Riley Act.

Republicans are probably jumping for joy that Democrats are using the death of Georgia student Laken Riley, who was raped and murdered by a Venezuelan illegal immigrant, to push for amendments to the legislation that would make it harder to deport illegal immigrants who commit crimes in the U.S.

The Laken Riley Act would mandate federal detention of illegal immigrants accused of theft, burglary, and other related crimes. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, along with 32 other Democrat Senators, voted for a motion to proceed with the legislation. However, Schumer said on the Senate floor that Democrats wanted amendments to “improve this bill” before it passes. (Red Wave Threat Forces Dems To Confront Their Weakest Policies)

“We’re going to ask our Republican colleagues to allow for debate and votes on amendments. I hope my Republican colleagues will allow for it,” Schumer said on the Senate floor. “This issue is very important. Americans deserve for us to debate the issues seriously, including by considering amendments from the Democratic side.”

Democrats won’t support the bill unless it includes “exempting Dreamers and requiring undocumented immigrants to be convicted of crimes, not just accused of them, before they can be detained,” Semafor reported. Apparently, Democrats haven’t examined the exit polling from the November election, when President-elect Donald Trump won back the White House and their party lost control of both chambers of Congress. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted Dec. 5-10 found that even more Americans are in favor of mass deportations of illegal immigrants than when Trump first took office in 2017.

“The share of respondents who said most or all immigrants in the U.S. illegally should be deported was largely stable at 53%, compared with 51% in 2017,” Reuters reported.

Illinois Dem. Sen. Dick Durbin told reporters on Monday that Senate Majority Leader John Thune is supportive of Democrat amendments because he wants the bill to have the appearance of bipartisanship. It’s hard not to call into question Thune’s ability to be the top Republican to lead the Senate if he can’t stand strong against a Democrat wishlist, which includes giving “Dreamers” a deportation pass even if they commit crimes against American citizens. (Front-Runner For White House Job Could Be A Deep State Crony)

Thune should force the Democrats to vote against a clean Laken Riley Act. Let them explain to the American people how they felt protecting criminal illegal immigrants was more important than the safety of U.S. citizens. There has never been a time when Americans were more supportive of strict immigration policies. All it takes is a Republican party with a backbone to enact the people’s will.

Democrats (and it seems Republicans also) are failing to understand the mandate voters gave U.S. elected officials on Nov. 5. Americans do not want business as usual, bills that neuter the cause, or weakness on issues we care about most. We want and deserve action. No more American lives should be lost to Democrat’s open border policies. Criminals must be deported. Anything less than this is a dereliction of duty by those elected to serve us.
