A major political row erupted after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s comments at Oxford, where she expressed disagreement with the prediction that India would become the world’s largest economy by 2060. Banerjee’s remarks drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who accused her of tarnishing India’s image on foreign soil.

BJP’s Amit Malviya posted a video clip of Banerjee’s comments on X, calling it “shameful” and “a disgrace to the constitutional office she holds.” Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar condemned her stance, stating that her remarks were an “insult” to the country, particularly given India’s rise to the world’s fifth-largest economy.

Banerjee, responding to the prediction, cited global turmoil and the aftermath of COVID-19 as reasons for her skepticism. She emphasised the uncertainty surrounding economic growth, adding that while it was her “dream” to see India thrive, it would depend on various global factors.

Tensions escalated as Majumdar reminded her of the Tata’s exit from Bengal, asserting that the state would see a revival under BJP leadership in 2026. Banerjee, however, dismissed the political rhetoric, citing the matter as sub judice and urging the critics to focus on their own political struggles.
